Mahjong solitaire and mahjong tile match are cousins, not twins. In classic mahjong solitaire you remove matching pairs of "free" tiles straight from a stacked layout; in a triple tile match game you tap tiles into a small tray and clear them in sets of three. It first appeared as a computer game in the early 1980s and has been one of the most popular forms of tile solitaire ever since.
