A Diary With Prompts: What to Write When You Don't Know What to Write

"Dear diary…" — and then nothing. The blank page has killed more diaries than laziness ever did. Prompts are the cure.

The blank page is a design flaw

A traditional diary asks you to perform two hard tasks at once: decide what today was about, then write it well. That's recall plus composition — genuinely difficult cognitive work, disguised as a cozy hobby. No wonder the entries stop by week two.

A prompt collapses both tasks into one easy one: answering. You already know whether you spent today on things you truly want. You don't have to summon that from nothing — you just have to respond when asked. That's why prompted diaries outlive freeform ones by months.

15 diary prompts that actually work

Good prompts are specific, slightly uncomfortable, and answerable in one line:

  1. What did today prove about what you actually value?
  2. Are you spending time on things you truly want?
  3. What moment today would you relive? Which would you redo?
  4. What did you avoid today?
  5. Who got the best of you today — and who deserved it?
  6. What did you do today that your future self will thank you for?
  7. What drained you today that you keep letting in?
  8. If today repeated forever, what would you change tomorrow morning?
  9. What made you feel most alive today?
  10. What are you pretending not to know right now?
  11. What small thing went right that you almost didn't notice?
  12. What did you say yes to that should have been a no?
  13. Are you doing everything necessary to achieve your goals?
  14. What would you attempt this month if you couldn't fail?
  15. What's one sentence you'd want to remember from today?
You don't need to be a writer to keep a diary. You need to be honest for one line.

The second fix: let the diary come to you

Prompts solve the blank page, but there's a second failure mode: forgetting the diary exists. A prompted diary that waits inside an app still requires you to remember it every evening. The diaries that survive are the ones that interrupt — arriving at a fixed time and refusing to be waved off.

How Fix Your Life works as a diary that asks first

Fix Your Life inverts the diary: instead of you opening it, it opens you.

  • The prompt arrives as an alarm at the time you chose — and rings until you answer. No forgetting, no blank page.
  • Pick your prompts: use the built-in confronting questions, or save the 15 above as custom messages.
  • Surprise mode draws a different prompt each day, so the diary keeps surprising you for months.
  • Every answer is saved with its question and date. Reread your diary anytime, watch the heatmap fill, and share the lines you're proud of as clean black & white images.
