Inside the game

A puzzle that teaches while you play

Every level moves you forward on the map, and every word you find stays with you.

Seven level scenes fanned out like postcards: space, the sea, the farm, a kitchen, a rainbow meadow, a castle and a city street

20 themed worlds

From the farm to the stars

Animals, food, the house, clothes, transport, nature, the body, school, sports, the city, the garden, music, the beach, sea animals, tools, weather, toys, technology, fantasy and space. Each world brings its own words and reviews the ones you already found.

Hear every word

Listen, repeat, remember

All ~2,270 words are recorded. You hear a word the moment you find it, and you can tap its sticker to hear it again as many times as you want. English spelling lies about sound; the audio doesn't.

Five words in letter tiles, one per level: CAT at A1, BREAD at A2, WEATHER at B1, VOLCANO at B2 and GALAXY at C1

A1 to C1

Grows with you, level by level

Words are ordered by the CEFR scale. At A1 you see the full word next to its translation; from A2 on, only the first letter, so you recall the English word yourself. The grids stay big and calm: 6x6, then 8x8.

  • About 2,270 words from CAT to GALAXY
  • Found words return in later levels for review
  • A hint reveals a letter when you're stuck

How it works

Find the word, learn the word

Each level takes a couple of minutes, and each word goes through the four steps that make vocabulary stick.

See the picture

Each level shows picture stickers: a lion, an apple, the rain. That is the word you look for.

Find the word

Swipe the English word in the letter grid. Words run across, down and diagonally.

Hear it, read it

The moment you find it you hear the pronunciation and see the translation in your language.

Meet it again

Words come back in later levels, and soon you only get the first letter. That is how they stick.

Pictures, not listsEvery word is an illustrated sticker, so the English word links straight to the thing.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Can a word search game really help you learn English?

Yes, when the words mean something to you. A plain word search only trains spotting letters. In Word Search: Learning English every word comes with a picture, its pronunciation and a translation, and it comes back in later levels, so finding it turns into remembering it.

Learn more →
Is Word Search: Learning English good for beginners?

It starts at zero. The first levels use everyday A1 words like CAT, DOG and APPLE, show the full word next to its translation, and use a 6x6 grid with big letters. Difficulty grows level by level up to C1.

Learn more →
Is it an ESL game for adults or for kids?

It is made for teens and adults learning English as a second language. The words are real everyday and advanced vocabulary, the pace is yours and nothing about it feels like a children's worksheet.

Learn more →
How many English words can I learn with the app?

About 2,270 English words across 2000 levels and 20 themed worlds, ordered by CEFR level from A1 (beginner) to C1 (advanced).

Learn more →
Does the app say the words out loud?

Every word has a recorded pronunciation. You hear it when you find the word and you can tap the sticker to hear it again as many times as you want.

Learn more →
Will I remember the words after playing?

That is the point of the design. Words you found return in later levels for review, and from A2 on you only see the translation and the first letter, so you have to recall the English word yourself.

Learn more →
How long should I play each day?

One level takes a couple of minutes. Ten minutes a day, every day, beats a long session once a week, and the daily streak helps you keep the habit.

Learn more →
Why are there pictures instead of definitions?

A picture links the English word straight to the thing, without going through your language first. It is faster to learn and easier to recall.

Learn more →
Is Word Search: Learning English free?

Yes. The app is free with ads, with no account and no subscription. A one-time purchase removes the banner and the ads between levels.
