How to Use Word Search Puzzles to Learn English

A word search teaches English when every word you find has a picture, a sound and a second encounter later. Without those three, it only trains your eyes to spot letters.

Why most word searches don't teach much

A printed puzzle gives you a list of words and a grid. You can find every word without knowing what any of them mean. That is pattern matching, not learning. To turn the puzzle into vocabulary practice you need to connect each word to its meaning and hear how it sounds.

The three things that make it work

  1. Meaning first. Know what you are looking for before you look. A picture is the fastest way: you see a lion, you search for LION.
  2. Sound. Say the word, or hear it, the moment you find it. A word you can't pronounce is a word you won't use.
  3. A second encounter. One find is forgotten in days. The same word showing up again a few levels later is what moves it into long-term memory.

How to do it with Word Search: Learning English

  1. Look at the stickers under the grid. Each one is a picture of the word you need to find.
  2. Swipe the word in the grid. When you get it, you hear the pronunciation and see the translation in your language.
  3. Tap any sticker to hear the word again. Say it out loud with the recording.
  4. Keep going. Words you found come back in later levels, and from A2 on you only get the first letter, so you recall the word instead of copying it.

Tips to get more out of each puzzle

  • Before swiping, say the English word in your head. Then check yourself with the audio.
  • Play a little every day rather than a lot once a week.
  • When a word surprises you, tap it twice and use it in a sentence of your own.
