How to Memorize English Vocabulary So It Sticks
To memorize English vocabulary, connect each word to an image, hear and say it, then recall it yourself a few days later and again a few weeks later. Repetition spread over time beats any amount of cramming.
1. Learn the most common words first
A few hundred everyday words cover a large part of what you read and hear. Start with things you can see and touch: animals, food, the house, clothes.
2. Link the word to a picture, not a list
Lists of word = translation are hard to remember. A picture connects the English word straight to the thing.
3. Hear it and say it
Saying the word out loud gives your memory a second path, and you learn the pronunciation at the same time.
4. Recall instead of re-reading
Looking at a word again feels productive but does little. Trying to produce the word yourself, even when you fail, is what makes it stick.
5. Review on a schedule
Meet the word again after a few days, then after a few weeks. Each time it takes longer to forget.
